What's Happening in Class this Week? 02/06/12-02/10/12
Reading: The bi-weekly story this week is Watermelon Days. The genre (or type of story) is realistic fiction. Realistic fiction means that the story could happen, but it did not. This is a story about a little girl who plants a watermelon seed. Our weekly comprehension strategy will continue to be I wonder statements (questioning) and I think statments (answers) about realistic fiction picture books. Spelling words: -gn, kn, wr words knock, knew, pocketknife, wrong, write, sign, gnat, wrist, unknown, writer, scooter, cartoon, dark, front, & past .***FYI, spelling words will only change every other week.** Writing: Writing of non-fiction stories about items we use everyday (paper). We are working on adding details and quotations for our stories. Math: We are continuing our unit on measurement. The focus will be measuring length.We will continue to review measuring length, volume, and weight. Science: We are continuing our unit on weather. We will be using thermometers and recording the temperatures in various locations (Ex: outside, in the classroom). Social Studies: We will be continuing our unit on Black History this week. We will also be discussing Abraham Lincoln and reading a short story about his life.

February Events: Groundhog's Day is Thursday, February 2nd. Progress Reports will be mailed home the week of February 13th. Early dismissal, Wednesday, February 8th at 1:45. Valentine's Day party, Tuesday, February 14th. Notes for the party will be sent home soon. February book orders are due Friday, February 17th. No School, Monday, February 20th. Spring pictures are Wednesday, February 22nd. Six Flags reading logs are due Wednesday, February 29th. Great Websites! The Electric Company is a PBS website that allows students to students to sign up free of charge and play games, conduct challenges and learn about educational topics. Spelling City allows the students to enter their weekly spelling words and play games and test themselves. Starfall allows the students to work on phonics skills and then read stories that contain the phonics skills. They even offer great activities for each of the holidays! Primary Games makes learning fun for all subjects! Carrot Sticks.com is a great website for students to practice their math facts! It's a free website that is available Monday-Friday 8-3. Students log in with their first name and last initial. Raz Kids is a great website for students to practice reading. The students log in my clicking on their name from the classroom list. The books are selected specifically for the student's reading ability. If you have any suggested websites please let me know! I'm always looking for great ones to add. |
